Brief Description
Founded by the Vikings the town’s original name was Norse Waesfjord. St Doologue’s Church was formally a Viking church of 1035. Selsker Abbey, now a ruin was an Augustinian foundation in which the first Anglo-Irish treaty was signed in 1169. Oscar Wilde’s mother “Speranza” was born in the town as was her cousin Sir Robert McClure who discovered the North-West Passage.
Local Area attractions
Fishing and boating available in the harbour. Maritime Museum in disused lightship. Famed Opera Festival in October each year. Bird watching on Saltee Islands.
