Brief Description
The Grand Canal reached the town in 1798. Cargoes of yellow brick were exported to Dublin during the19th century.

Distillers D E Williams immortalised “Tullamore Dew” and later “ Irish Mist”.

Brief Description
One of Irelands most celebrated ecclesiastical sites. It has a cathedral, eight ruined churches, three sculptured high crosses and part of two more, two round towers and more than 200 monumental slabs.
There are also castle ruins. St Ciaran founded a monastery here in 548 which flourished under the patronage of various kings. The Viking Turgesius and his wife Ota sailed up the Shannon in 844 and burned it. Most of the crosses and ruins date from the 10th & 11th centuries.

Birr
Brief Description
Attractive town with many Georgian houses. Birr Castle dominates the town and suffered many sieges in the 16th & 17th centuries. Originally a fortress of the O’Carrolls it has since been held by Normans, Cromwellians, Jacobites, Williamites and others.
Arthur Bell Nicholls, rector of Birr married Charlotte Bronte in 1854 the honey moon was spent here and in nearby Banagher.
Local Area attractions
Anthony Trollope wrote his first novels while working in the post office in Banagher.
