Longford
Brief Description
Longford was a terminal of a branch of the Royal Canal. The O’Farrell family built a castle and Dominican friary here in about 1400.
St Mel’s Classical limestone cathedral dates from 1856. Nearby Ballymahon was Oliver Goldsmith’s last Irish home before his departure in 1752.
