Londonderry/Derry
Brief Description
Most complete walled city in the United Kingdom enjoying one of the most attractive situations in Ireland. St Columba founded his first abbey here in 546. On the banks of Lough Foyle it was vunerable to attacks the most famous of which was the 105 siege in 1689 when James II surrounded the city and placed a boom across the river. The siege was finally broken when the ship the Mountjoy broke the boom, and Derry remained inviolated, thus earning the title “the Maiden City”.
