Antiquarian and oculist Sir William Wilde, father of Oscar was born here.
Nearby at Frenchpark there are remains of a 14th century abbey and other ruins.
Also here is the grave of Douglas Hyde, first President of the Republic and founder of the Gaelic League, who was born in the local rectory.
