Brief Description
Standing on the River Blackwater at one time it boosted 20 Churches. St Carthach found a monastery here in 7th century. It suffered Viking assaults and burnings.
Lismore Castle was built by King John in1185 probably on the site of St Carthach’s monastry. Its was passed to Sir Walter Raleigh who sold it in 1602 to Richard Boyle, “Great Earl of Cork”. Robert Boyle the chemist, who gave us Boyle’s Law was born here. In1753 it passé to the Devonshires one of whom rebuilt it from ruin in 1812.
