Brief Description

One of Irelands most celebrated ecclesiastical sites. It has a cathedral, eight ruined churches, three sculptured high crosses and part of two more, two round towers and more than 200 monumental slabs.

There are also castle ruins. St Ciaran founded a monastery here in 548 which flourished under the patronage of various kings. The Viking Turgesius and his wife Ota sailed up the Shannon in 844 and burned it. Most of the crosses and ruins date from the 10th & 11th centuries.
