Brief Description

Attractive town with many Georgian houses. Birr Castle dominates the town and suffered many sieges in the 16th & 17th centuries. Originally a fortress of the O’Carrolls it has since been held by Normans, Cromwellians, Jacobites, Williamites and others.

Arthur Bell Nicholls, rector of Birr married Charlotte Bronte in 1854 the honey moon was spent here and in nearby Banagher.
