Brief Description
Neat village on the River Bonet. There are scanty ruins of Breffni Castle. It was from here in1152 that Dervorgilla O’Rourke, called “the Helen of Ireland”, eloped with Dermot MacMurrough king of Leinster, while her husband was away on a pilgrimage to atone for beating her with a whip. She and her husband were reunited, but Dermot was “blackballed” by his peers which caused him to seek allies in Wales and this led to the Norman Invasion. There’s some Irish history for you!
